The epicentre of the earthquake was the Bungo Channel, a strait separating the Japanese islands of Kyushu and Shikoku, the agency said, adding that no tsunami warning had been issued. Ehime and Kochi prefectures were hit by the quake with an intensity of 6 on Japan's 1-7 scale, the JMA said. No major damage has been reported so far, according to local media reports.

Taiwan’s east coast is breathtakingly rugged and a major tourist draw, its geography a testament to the powerful tectonic forces that lie underneath. The island is located where the Philippines Sea Plate meets the vast Eurasian Plate. The result is a tear-drop-shaped island that boasts a towering spine of mountains running down its middle and an eastern coast that often experiences tremors. In contrast, the east coast is much less populated and rural. Winding roads and a much slower train line cling to steep cliffs and have to go through dozens of tunnels.

But then, even in a fault-riddled place with long and hard experience with earthquakes, the jolt of aftershock after aftershock was startling, continuing every few minutes throughout the day. In Hualien County, close to the epicenter, 71 people were trapped in two mining areas as of Wednesday night and dozens of others were stranded, according to officials. Around 14,000 households were without water, and 1,000 households were without power.

Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration issued a tsunami warning following the quake. The Japan Meteorological Agency also issued a tsunami warning for Miyakojima and Okinawa islands, warning of waves up to 3 meters expected imminently. Several aftershocks were felt in Taiwan, including one that registered a magnitude of 6.5, according to the USGS. Reuters previously addressed another clip shared online showing the same June 2017 tsunami in Greenland that was falsely attributed to the February Turkey-Syria earthquake (here). The clips pre-date the July 2023 Alaska earthquake and were attributed to a tsunami caused by a 2017 landslide in western Greenland.

Posts sharing the video as more recent make reference to a July 16, 2023 earthquake focused on the Alaska Peninsula, an area that separates the Gulf of Alaska from the Bering Sea (here). SAN SALVADOR, July 18 (Reuters) - A magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck off El Salvador's Pacific coast at a depth of nearly 70 km (43 miles) on Tuesday evening, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said, with reports indicating it was felt in several nations in Central America. There were no immediate reports of damage and the earthquake did not trigger a tsunami warning for El Salvador, El Salvador's environment ministry said. Salvadoran lawmaker Salvador Chacon said on Twitter that checks were being carried out in the coastal city of La Libertad, near the capital San Salvador, although there were no reports of damage from the municipality. The quake was also felt in Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala and Belize, according to local media and Reuters witnesses. CNN —A tsunami advisory issued after a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck off the coast of Alaska late Saturday has since been canceled, officials said. The earthquake hit offshore about 55 miles southwest from Sand Point, Alaska, at a depth of 13 mi. The quake prompted a brief tsunami warning for parts of Alaska near the Aleutian islands, extending from Unimak Pass to Kennedy Entrance, before being revised to a tsunami advisory. There is no tsunami threat for other Pacific coasts in the US and Canada, the advisory said. There is a “watch” currently in effect for the Shishaldin volcano.
